Summer Solstice

What did you all do to celebrate (the very hot!) Summer Solstice yesterday?

I went to the Athleta-sponsored "Mind Over Madness" Yoga in Times Square, and as promised I snapped a few pics...

This free event was amazing and I would definitely participate again next year! It was so cool doing yoga in the middle of Times Square with thousands of other yogis of all levels....what great energy!

I originally had wanted to take the Bikram class offered (since that's my yoga of choice), but couldn't make the mid-day class, so instead had 'settled' on the 7pm Vinyasa class. I'm glad I did!

The class was taught by Dana Flyn, a dance and music-loving yogi who co-founded Laughing Lotus NYC. What other yoga teacher would have everyone shaking their hips (literally) to a soundtrack that mixed Jay-Z, Frank Sinatra, and Janis Joplin?!

My view of her was on this slightly distant Toshiba screen! She's the one in the middle with the blue t-shirt!

Oh and did I mention she had us all doing "the wave"...

Some of this may not sound like 'true yoga' to all of you (especially for me who likes the regimen of hatha poses done in a hot room!), but there are soooo many forms of yoga. Did you know there's even Laughter Yoga?!  I'm all for anything that gets your body moving and also for putting out some positive energy into the universe!

Oh, and one last picture just to prove I was actually there...

This was before it started, while I was watching girls in front of me taking photos of themselves doing advanced yoga poses, which may explain why I look slightly scared in this picture! Maybe I'll bring some friends next year and have someone photograph me in a mediocre tree pose?! Any takers?
