Fortune-Cookie Friday

I'm feeling really good about my fortune from a cookie one of my co-workers dropped on my desk the other day after lunch -  "You are going to have a very comfortable old age". Sounds good to me! Plus a double smiley face!

I'm headed to RI this weekend to go 'wedding-dress shopping' for my sister Kim, hopefully I'll come back on Sunday with a few pics to share!

Have a great weekend!

Why I Didn't Cook This Week

So I know its Wednesday, and I do apologize, but NOTHING is cooking this week!

Why am I slacking you ask?

2 reasons:

1. Starting last week and continuing into this week I've been doing 'raw food' lunches. Well, sort of. I've been eating a big plate of freshly cut raw vegetables (cucumber, carrots, and red peppers), with a side of hard-boiled eggs. And yes, I am aware that eggs do not count as raw food. My co-worker did let me know I could eat chickpeas or other beans as a 'raw' protein (as long as they are just soaked, not cooked obviously). I should also note that I follow my 'raw food' lunches with a non-raw afternoon snack of hummus and my favorite Wasa Multi-Grain crackers. I'm never going to do a raw food diet all the way (I just love eating too much to commit to that), but there are HUGE health benefits to eating raw fruits and vegetables. (Hmm, seems like something I should discuss more on Friday...hint hint)

Image from HERE

2. Since I ate even healthier than usual last week, I decided all bets were off by Friday. A weekend spent with Taz featured:  pulled pork, corn great, and mac&cheese at The Smoke Joint (Friday), late-night Papa John's pizza (Saturday), and a huge spread of meat, rice, and fried food at his favorite go-to Filipino restaurant in Queen's (Sunday), PLUS popcorn, ice-cream, and fried chicken. Who has time to cook when you're that busy eating?!?

So that's my food dilemma..its back to healthy eating at work this week, and I'm pretty sure all bets will be off again when I head home for a weekend in RI on Friday!

Anyone want to share their crazy 'healthy' eating habits? Comment below!

Girl Crush: Lindsey Tramuta of Lost in Cheeseland

Image from Lost in Cheeseland

I think that I finally understand the term 'girl crush', as I have completely fallen for Lindsey and her blog, Lost in Cheeseland. She's an American living in Paris and, as you may know by now, I have a really big thing for Paris. I also have a really big thing for magazine hoarding, parmesan cheese, excessive book buying, and pro-longed newspaper reading, as apparently does Lindsey.  That could easily be me in that picture to the right, gazing out at the Eiffel Tower, could it not?!  Anyyyyway, her blog is pretty cool - I love her photos and writing style (she's written for a number of web and print publications as well).  Check out her Franco File Fridays for her one-on-ones with other creative-types living and working in France. Oh, and did I mention she also owns a cookie company called Lola's Cookies....how much cuter can she get?!

P.S. I came across Lost in Cheeseland on the Wayfare Magazine blog, another one of my new favorite sites to hit up whenever I feel like having a travel daydream!

Spring Fever Shoe Buy!

So the temperature may have cooled down today (on the East Coast at least!), but Thursday it was Hot Hot Hot, with a weather forecast of even warmer temperatures on Friday. I think we were all feeling a full-on-case of Spring Fever this week! I embraced the unseasonably warm weather Thursday with a little shoe shopping (and toe-nail painting!) and picked up these very affordable color-blocked turq/green wedges at DSW. Normally I am not a shoe person at all - shoes are usually an after-thought to my whole outfit. Most of the time I will be completely put together and fully accessorized on top, while wearing really plain, but comfortable, shoes on the bottom. But hey, we can all use a little change sometimes right?! I've decided to have a little more fun with my footwear for Spring, and you know what? On Friday I went to work with bright shoes, bright nails, and a big smile on my face. Sometimes all you need is a little retail therapy to give you a lift. (Get it?!... Wedges - Lift?)

Have a great weekend!

Happy Birthday Emily!

Happy Birthday to my best friend and former roommate of many years, Emily! One of the first people I met in New York (when we both attended a pre-college program at Pratt Institute at the age of 17),  I don't think NYC living would have ever been the same without her! (She just recently moved to San Diego!) 10 years of friendship is no small thing, so I have to share her birthday here, and Emily, I hope you don't mind, cause I'm pulling out the photos..

But I'm going to be nice, because OH the photos I really wanted to post...
  • Emily in her go-to Halloween costume for 3 years in a row (or 4 maybe?).., all black clothes and a Darth Vader mask
  • Various stages of ridiculousness in our 4th floor walk-up apartment with friends and other roommates...  'making it rain', dancing around the apartment to 'Bedrock', doing the 'hair dance' to Beyonce songs, and a lot of pre-party-camera-posing in a poorly lit living-room
  • Endless beach (& boat) photos,  including a very memorable all-day affair on the Fourth of July at Jones Beach
  • FRESHMAN YEAR COLLEGE PHOTOS... I really don't think this even warrants further description..
Ok, but I just have to include one photo of us 'On a Boat' because really it just represents everything...

Happy Birthday!

Culture Re-Cap: Art After Dark

Happy Friday!
I did not forget I promised you all 'Feel Better' Fridays, but I have so many ideas I couldn't decide on how to start off! So instead I'm finally getting to a post from what I did last Friday, which was attending the Art After Dark at the Guggenheim Museum. As far as I'm concerned this still falls under the 'Feel Better' category, since dressing-up and hanging out with friends at a museum on a Friday night is something that made me feel very happy at the end of the work week!

Here's a few pics from the event. Since a stern security guard stopped me from snapping pics beyond the main floor, I couldn't get any close-ups of the art. But you can check out what the John Chamberlain: Choices exhibit is all about here

This is the Guggenheim...

This is Taz and I wearing our "Upper East Side Best"...

And these are our fabulous Friends:

Khary & Jennifer

Laura & Marco

Rey & Michelle

Ruth & Scott

I'm not sure when the next Art After Dark is (it's a seasonal event), but if you live in New York (or are visiting!) I strongly recommend the MOMA for a Friday night museum excursion. Particularly because it is FREE admission (Target sponsored) every Friday from 4 to 8pm. I'll be going one Friday soon to check out the Cindy Sherman retrospective, which I heard received great reviews!

Pretty much the bottom-line advice for feeling good this weekend:

Do something cultural...Do something with friends...and always, always...Smile for the camera

Bok Choy with Ginger & Cashews

I made 'toasted' Quinoa to add to my Bok Choy dish. It goes well with brown rice too!

I had a craving for Bok Choy last week, and since I was too lazy to stop in Chinatown for what I knew would be fresh vegetables, I was stuck attempting to buy it at my local grocery store.  I found some, but the sad withered leaves weren't exactly calling my name. I decide to try the local organic store nearby, and was pleased to find very fresh and healthy looking Bok Choy! I even bought my Quinoa and cashews there (which I was planning to serve it with), and they were actually cheaper than both items were at Key Foods. I love buying organic and local when possible, and if you can, you should do it too! Trust me, its worth it (and sometimes more affordable than you think)!

Ingredients:

1 cup of white Quinoa
3 heads of Bok Choy
1 piece of Ginger (I bought 2, but decided 1 may be enough, since its pretty strong)
4 cloves of Garlic
1 cup crushed cashews
Soy Sauce ( I used Kikkoman Low Sodium Soy Sauce, but most people prefer the real, salty deal)
Toasted Sesame Oil
Olive Oil
Crushed Red Pepper

Directions:

1. Prepare your 'toasted' Quinoa. Add a little olive oil to a small saucepan heated on low. Add a 1 1/2 cups of rinsed white Quinoa and coat in the olive oil. Add 2 cups of water and bring to a boil. Cover pan and lower to simmer for about 15 minutes.
1. Cut stems off Bok Choy, wash leaves and stems thoroughly
2. Mince Garlic. Peal and mince ginger.
3. In a wok, saute garlic in olive oil about 1 minute, add the ginger.
4. Add the stems of the bok choy (these take longer to cook then the leaves). Add a generous amount of soy sauce and a few drops of the sesame oil. Allow the stems to soften before adding the leaves (about 5-10 minutes), add more oil if necessary.
5. Add the leaves to the wok and cook down (the leaves cook like spinach). Add more soy sauce if you like and crushed red pepper.
6. Add your cooked quinoa and stir all together, coating thoroughly in the soy sauce.
7. Serve and top with crushed cashews, adding more red pepper if you like it spicy!

Anyone have any other good Bok Choy recipes?

Paris Persuasion

So for those of you who don't already know, I'm fantasizing about a trip to Paris right now. It doesn't help that Paris keeps popping up everyone on the internet, and I get the sense that I've stumbled upon a travel trend!  Lucky for me, while a future trip to Paris is (for now) a fantasy, I'm fortunate to have memories of Paris from my first (and only) Europe trip.....way back in 2006. I had just graduated college and took off on a two week trip with stops in London, Paris, Florence & Milan with my good friend Eve. I was so new at traveling, so excited, and so naive. I would have been completely lost without her, and lucky for me she's a map girl. (Whereas I don't know how to read a map, and pretty much in general refuse to use one...be it in a museum or navigating the streets of another country!)  We had are share of mishaps, but overall it was an amazing experience that kept me wanting for more. The Paris portion of our trip was supposed to be 4 days, but turned into 5, with a day trip to Versailles, and another to Monet's house in Giverny (look for a post of my pics from his beautiful garden soon!)

Here's a few pics of my favorite places in Paris...(photo credit to Eve as well as some of these are hers!)

The first place I'm going back to on my next Paris trip is the Louvre, as I was completely enthralled with that museum and have literally not stopped thinking about it for the past 6 years. Then I'm going to park myself at an outdoor cafe with a glass of wine, a journal, and a camera - attempting to be Parisian while being totally touristy at the same time. In the meantime, I just finally got around to watching Midnight in Paris, and am embracing the early 20th century vibe captured in the movie by picking up my used 1974 copy of Charmed Circle: Gertrude Stein & Company. That's 576 pages of Parisian Bohemia, I think that will be enough fantasizing for me!

Friday Find AND Fave!....Vintage Cameras

So some of my favorite blogs do "Friday Finds" and some others do "Friday Favorites"...I'm actually thinking about doing a "Feel-Better Friday", where I blog about healthy and happy things to make you feel good! What do you guys think?

In the meantime...I'm succumbing to the notion of both the "finds" and the "faves" today, since I really want to show you the the super-cool vintage cameras that I found in my grandparents' house...

These are pretty just to look at, but I really want to play with them too, so I used the good-old world-wide-web to find out more about them. They are (from left to right):

Argus Autronic I (1962-1965)
Argus Argoflex 40 (1950-1954)

I was happy that at least one of them, the Argus Autronic, took 35mm film, since that actually gives me a shot of being able to use it! Plus it looks really great and is heavy and solid feeling, which I love. I have the detachable flash to go with it too, but I think its best to try it outdoors first.

The immensely successful Kodak Instamatic, will just be sitting pretty on a bookshelf, or maybe posing with me in future photos, since the 126 film used in this camera is no longer made.

The oldest of the group, the Argus Argoflex 40, takes 620 film (black&white), but you can also re-roll 120 film onto the spool. (A much cheaper option, as the 620 film is about $13 a roll, and the 120 about $3!).

After my mini-online education, I took a lunchtime trip today to B&H to buy film and get an opinion about the cameras. I can't believe I've never been in this NYC photo-super-store, but I will definitely be back! I was a little overwhelmed by all the video and photo equipment, but I made by way over to the film section, where I had all my questions answered by the very helpful staff.  The gentleman who assisted me went over each camera with me and then offered to show me how to load the film after I purchased it. He also suggested I take notes (I did!)

Hopefully I catch a nice day this weekend and will get to try out my two 'new' cameras! Can't wait to show you the photos!

P.S. For those who don't already know, I have a slight Camera obsession right now (hence my enthusiasm about these great finds). Its right up there with my Paris and Pinterest obsessions (which by the way is were you're headed if you click on that link).

P.P.S.  Don't forget to let me know your thoughts on "Feel-Better Fridays"! Click on 'Comments' below...
Have a great weekend everyone!

Double-Trouble Meat Sauce (& Garlic String Beans)

Hey everyone! You can now see a list of the recipes featured on this blog on my "What's Cooking Wednesdays" page.  Look up, its right there!

This past Friday Taz and I decided to stay in, watch a movie, and cook dinner. The movie never happened (it was replaced by multiple episodes of Modern Family via Hulu), but the above dinner did. Below is the recipe for our 'Double Trouble' meat sauce (I'm coining this name on the basis of the sauce consisting of both ground beef and Italian sausage), which we served with a quick string bean side-dish.

Double Trouble Meat Sauce

Ingredients:
1/2 head of Garlic (minced)
1/2 med. White Onion (diced)
1 1/2 lbs. Ground Beef
6 Sweet Italian Sausage Links (cut in 1/4 pieces)
1 28oz can Tomato Sauce
1 28oz can Crushed Tomatoes
1 6oz can Tomato Paste
Everyday/Italian Seasoning
Oregano
Basil
Crushed Red Pepper
Sea Salt
Ground Black Pepper
Olive Oil

Directions:
1.  Mince the garlic and dice the onion. Heat a large sauté pan and and coat with olive oil. Sauté garlic and onion a couple of minutes on low-medium heat. Add the ground beef to the pan and mix all together. Cook on medium-high heat until beef is completely browned. Remove from heat, drain meat in a colander to remove juices and return to pan.
2.  Brown sausage in another large pan. Pierce a few holes in the sausage links to release air before cooking. We cooked the whole sausages first 3-5 minutes so they were easier to cut. We removed carefully from pan, cut into 1/4 pieces on cutting board and returned all to pan to thoroughly cook for about another 10 minutes.
*Suggestion: If you want to skip a step (and a pan) you can also chop up the raw sausage in small pieces and mix in with the raw ground beef, cooking both meats with the onion and garlic. I had wanted my sausage in big pieces so we cooked it separately.
3. Add your ground beef and sausage to a LARGE saucepan heated on low-medium heat (this recipe makes a good amount so make sure the pan is big enough for the meat and the tomato sauces). Add the Crushed Tomatoes, Tomato Sauce, and Tomato Paste. Stir continuously while adding the seasonings: Everyday/Italian Seasoning, Oregano, Basil, Crushed Red Pepper (*optional if you like it a little spicy), Sea Salt, and Ground Black Pepper.
4. Cover pan and allow your sauce to simmer on low-heat for at least 45mins (up to 2 hours), stirring occasionally. The longer you cook your sauce, the more the flavors will soak in!

It was a Friday night and we were hungry, so we simmered the sauce for barely 45mins, while we boiled water and made some Farfalle pasta (bow-ties). (This is the only way I will eat white pasta, because bow-ties were my favorite type of pasta as a child. You have to admit, it is the cutest looking pasta!) We made 3/4 of a pound of pasta, poured on the sauce heavily and topped with freshly shredded Romano cheese. Served with *Garlic String Beans on the side.

NOTE: You can freeze the rest of your Double Trouble Meat Sauce. I poured mine in a gallon-size freezer bag to save for a later date. This recipe makes enough sauce for 6-8 servings of pasta.

* for the Garlic String Beans
Ingredients:
Very simply this is string beans, minced garlic, olive oil, and salt & pepper. We used about 1 lb of string beans and 4-5 cloves of minced garlic.

Directions:
1. Cut the ends off your string beans and wash thoroughly. Heat olive oil in a wok, add garlic and sauté a minute or less.
2. Add the string beans, toss with the olive oil and garlic. Add more olive oil if necessary plus the salt & pepper.

We cooked these in the wok for about 5 minutes, which results in very crunchy string beans (just the way Taz likes them!). For less crunch, cook longer, or boil the string beans in a little water first before stir-frying.

Sunday Style: Make a Statement

Statement earrings are back for Spring, did you know?!
Personally, I never knew they went away, since I wear big, elaborate earrings on a daily basis. (The ones in the left picture are from Forever 21). Its good to know this season, however, I'll be right on trend. Bold, bright, and bedazzled earrings were present all over the Spring 12 runways...here's a few examples below, along with a few  selections from my go-to stores for cheap & fun earrings - Forever 21 & Aldo.

Its Wednesday Afternoon...Take a Style Break

(from my Harper's Bazaar March Issue)

I'm loving this accessory trend for Spring. I've been waiting for chokers to make a big comeback since Junior High. Even better paired with a pendant!
